"Tears Dry on Their Own" is a soulful and poignant song by the late British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. The track is featured on her critically acclaimed second studio album, "Back to Black," released in 2006. Amy Winehouse, known for her distinctive voice and deeply personal lyrics, created a unique blend of soul, jazz, and R&B influences in her music.

Released as a single in 2007, "Tears Dry on Their Own" draws inspiration from the Motown sound, sampling the instrumentation from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." The song showcases Winehouse's ability to fuse vintage sounds with a modern twist.

Lyrically, "Tears Dry on Their Own" explores themes of heartbreak, resilience, and self-reliance. Winehouse's powerful and soulful vocals convey a mix of vulnerability and strength, creating a compelling narrative within the song. The title itself suggests a sense of moving on and overcoming the pain of a failed relationship.

Despite its melancholic subject matter, the song has an upbeat and infectious rhythm, contributing to its widespread appeal. Amy Winehouse's soulful delivery and the song's retro-inspired production make "Tears Dry on Their Own" a standout track in her discography and a testament to her unique musical talent. Tragically, Amy Winehouse passed away in 2011, but her influence on the music industry and her legacy as a gifted artist continue to endure.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
All I can ever be to you is the darkness that we knew
And this regret I've got accustomed to
Once it was so right, when we were at our height
Waiting for you in the hotel at night
I knew I hadn't met my match
But every moment we could snatch
I don't know why I got so attached
It's my responsibility
And you don't owe nothing to me
But to walk away, I have no capacity

[Chorus]
He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown (I'm grown)
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

[Verse 2]
I don't understand, why do I stress the man?
When there's so many bigger things at hand
We could've never had it all
We had to hit a wall
So this is inevitable withdrawal
Even if I stop wanting you and perspective pushes through
I'll be some next man's other woman soon
I cannot play myself again
I should just be my own best friend
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men

[Chorus]
He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown (I'm grown)
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

[Bridge]
So we are history
Your shadow covers me
The sky above ablaze

[Chorus]
He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own

[Verse 3]
I wish I could say no regrets
And no emotional debts
'Cause as we kiss goodbye, the sun sets
So we are history, the shadow covers me
The sky above ablaze that only lovers see

[Chorus]
He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown (I'm grown)
And in your way, my blue shade
My tears dry on their own
Woah, he walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I am grown
And in your way, my deep shade
My tears dry on their own, woah

[Outro]
He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day, but I'm grown
And in your way, my deep shade
My tears dry

Review comment:
- I watched the documentary "Amy" for the second time tonight. I'm primarily a rocker, so when she was at her height she was barely on my radar. I was aware of "Rehab" and her bad reputation in the press, but that was it. And like so many, I gave her music a chance only after she died. Immediately I could tell this was something special and I bought "Back to Black". I couldn't believe this was the same person comedians and journalists were painting as some dirty, good for nothing junkie. The sophistication, sensitivity and pain, not to mention her melodic gifts, immediately overwhelmed me. It's easy to romanticize someone after they're gone. Amy wasn't perfect and made some bad decisions, but she was also so authentic and gifted. You get the feeling that she was willing to die for her music. It sounds strange to say this, but I went into a deep depression after absorbing the album. There was a sense of loss, as if I had known her personally. And I did in a way, through the music. She was no longer some disheveled media caricature to me, but a real person with an open and wounded heart. I was going through my own problems with addiction and relationships at the time so the music especially spoke to me. So much so that I can hardly bear to listen to the full record now because it provokes a real sense of grief. I love her almost like I love an ex girlfriend. Maybe more, because she bared it all without holding back. There's no game playing when I hear a song like "Wake up Alone", which is a real heartbreaker. There's no shame in dying, nor failure. Not even dying young. The shame would be if she died broken hearted, and I fear that maybe she did. After Blake and her media crucifixion she seemed broken. And that's just so sad because she was so beautiful and so full of raw, true emotion. She deserved better than a brief, unhappy life. I hope at the end, sitting there watching her videos one last time and having a drink before finally going to sleep, that it dawned on her how much she really accomplished and had to be proud of. Now the tears are ours to cry.
- amy's eyeliner will always be iconic.
- This is, in my opinion, the best song Amy Winehouse ever released. I am so sad that she is no longer with us.
- Amy was so ahead of her time. Timeless actually!
- I don’t think Amy realized just how brilliant she was. If only she loved her talent enough to know it was something that needed to stay on this earth. She’s irreplaceable.
